If you were a fan of Caroline Rose's excellent 2014 folk/Americana release I Will Not Be Afraid, it's important to know upfront that the Caroline Rose you are getting in 2018 is an entirely different artist. In fact, on Loner, listeners will hardly get the same Caroline Rose across songs. The record is rich with diversity, bouncing between the disco-infused indie-pop of "More of the Same," the punk edginess of "Money," the sentimental orchestral pop of "Getting to Me," and the punchy, anthemic indie rock of "Soul No. 5." But what's impressive is not the fact that Rose genre-leaps so eagerly; rather, its the ease with which she does it. Here it seems like each of these identities is in her wheelhouse, the form of each song complementing its function. Loner succeeds because of how much it has to offer--each song brimming with tongue-in-cheek humor and infectious hooks. Few albums this year are quite as unapologetically bold.
